Blockbuster customers have spoken about their fears for the future of the firm’s Chronicle Country store.
The high street DVD and video games rental firm became the latest retailer to go into administration on Wednesday (January 16), leading to concerns about the Biggleswade branch.
Joint administrators have been appointed to run the business from advisory firm Deloitte.
Deloitte has said Blockbuster UK will keep trading while it tries to find a buyer.
The shop in Biggleswade market square has been a popular choice for film fans, video gamers and families for many years.
Biggleswade deputy mayor Councillor Hazel Ramsay said: “We are sad to hear the news about Blockbuster and we very much hope that a buyer can be found and that the Biggleswade store stays open.
“The shop is especially popular with families who can rent films and also buy the large buckets of popcorn and other snacks while they are there.”
Martin Thomas, chairman of the Biggleswade Chamber of Trade said: “It’s unfortunate that the store could be at risk of closure.
“We certainly don’t want to see empty shops so hopefully it can stay open and if it doesn’t then I would hope another retailer can come in and make the most of a large and well-placed premises.”
Readers commenting on the Biggleswade Chronicle Facebook page spoke about their sadness at the news.
Emma Morris said: “We often use Blockbuster. We frequently decide on the spur of a moment to rent a film and will now have to look at alternatives. It’s a real shame.
“Blockbuster is the only reason I ever visit Biggleswade market square.”
Carolyn Martin added: “It’s been a mainstay in Biggleswade for many years and will be a sad loss.”
