Councillor who is so on the money

The man responsible for much of Central Bedfordshire’s finances has been nominated for a prestigious award.

Councillor Maurice Jones, deputy leader of Central Beds Council and executive member for corporate resources, is in the running for an award from the LGiU and CCLA.

Mr Jones – a ward councillor for Biggleswade North who also lives in the town – was nominated by council leader Councillor James Jamieson.

Now in their fourth year, the C’llr Awards are the only national accolades that recognise and reward individual councillors for their work and dedication.

Mr Jones, 70, has been put forward for the CCLA award for outstanding contribution to financial performance.

He is particularly proud given the challenge posed by the role in a tough economic climate.

Mr Jones said: “I have been involved with the financial side of the council’s work for almost a decade, since I first became a Mid Beds District Councillor.

“Before 2009 when Central Beds Council was formed the government was gradually increasing the funds it was giving to councils but since that time it has been steadily decreasing so that does provide a challenge.”

The role is also demanding due to the extra areas of responsibility that come with being a Central Beds Council executive member.

He added: “It is a larger council and it is responsible for more than Mid Beds – particularly in terms of adult and children’s services that we fund.

“But in recent years we have cut the amount we have been spending while maintaining the services we deliver, which is very pleasing.”

Mr Jones, a semi-retired businessman, used to run a software company and still works as an advisor to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

Mr Jamieson said: “In his role Councillor Jones has made a key contribution to the strong financial performance of the council at a time of considerable pressure due to the tough economic climate. He deserves recognition.

“I wish him the best of luck at the ceremony.”
