Countryside loses out from national policy
A MASSIVE 90 per cent of countryside in this area could lose its government protection from inappropriate developments.
The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has stated its concerns that the Government’s National Planning Policy Framework, which will be finalised soon, does not recognise the value of the countryside as a whole as in previous policies.
Ninty per cent of countryside in North East Bedfordshire is unprotected by designations such as local nature reserves, areas of outstanding natural beauty and green belts – the joint third highest percentages in the country.
The CPRE is concerned that without a policy that recognises the importance of the character of England’s countryside the land will be vulnerable to scattered, unplanned development as well as urban sprawl, instead of investment in development that focuses on urban renewal and, where necessary, urban extensions.
But the government has argued that there is no need for a national policy to protect the wider countryside as local authorities can introduce their own policies.
