A cricket club chairman has paid tribute to a late player who was tragically killed in a road collision.

Russell Jones, chairman of Southill Park Cricket Club said players and coaches were shocked and saddened to hear of 19-year-old Dean Johnson’s death on Monday last week.

Dean, of Lucas Way, Shefford died when his blue Renault Clio hit a tree by the B1042 Tadlow Road, north-east of Wrestlingworth.

Russell said: “He was a quiet and very likeable man who always gave his all and helped others.

“The cricket season last year was his first for the club and he was awarded the Captain’s Player of the Year award, which shows how talented and dedicated he was.

“We were due to hold our annual awards night on Friday last week but we have postponed it out of respect to Dean.”

Dean’s funeral is at St Michael and All Angel’s Church in Shefford on Friday, October 26 at 2pm.
