Crocus campaign to fight polio

Community record effort will help eradicate polio

A NEW Rotary campaign aims to eradicate polio and members of the public are invited to help out by taking part in a world record attempt.

Focus on the Crocus is the initiative which has attracted support from clubs all over the country, and the Rotary Club of Biggleswade Ivel and the Rotary Club of Biggleswade are spearheading the campaign in Chronicle Country.

Members of the clubs will be trying to break the record for the most people ever to plant bulbs in one site, and will be using the Dan Albone car park in Biggleswade for the attempt on Saturday, October 2.

Keith Hitchisson, a member of the Rotary Club of Biggleswade Ivel said: "We will probably need at least 350 people, though 400 or upwards of that would be ideal. Other Rotary clubs will also be trying to break the record, but really everyone is in this together so it is a collective effort."

Bulbs will be supplied by the Rotary clubs, and they will all be ruby giant crocuses.

The ruby giant crocuses represent the dye colour which is dabbed on children's little 'pinkie' fingers to indicate that they have been immunised against polio in parts of Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Nigeria which are affected by the illness.

Entrants are also being sought for a flower competition which will see residents growing their own ruby giant crocuses in their gardens and community spaces, which will then be judged by Rotarians.

Prizes will be sponsored by Langford Garden Centre and will be awarded for the most unusual container for crocuses to be planted in and for the most attractive display of ruby giant bulbs, and judging will take place on Rotary Day, on February 23 next year.

Anyone wanting to take part can buy a packet of 50 bulbs for 5, and all proceeds will go towards Rotary's End Polio Now campaign.
