Crooks try to break into charity shop

British Red Cross left with £1,000 worth of damage

Locks were chiselled and door panels broken as thieves tried to break into a Luton charity shop in the early hours of Tuesday morning, March 9.

Workers at the British Red Cross in Park Street were alerted to the attempted burglary by the shop alarm going off at 4.30am. Police were also called.

Manager Elsie Shafique said: "Luckily the alarm went off. They've tried to get in the back entrance.

"They've taken all the panels off and chiselled the locks on the double doors.

"They've tried for what? They can't get anything out of here.

"Unless they have mistaken us for the bookies next door – they wouldn't get anything out of here apart from secondhand clothes."

It is expected that it will cost around 1,000 to repair the damage.

If you saw anyone acting suspicious near to the shop or have any information, call police on 01234 841212.
