A charity worker has been nominated for a young people’s achievement award.

Aysha Boshor, managing director of the Aysha Academy, is in the running for an award in the Young People of the Year (YOPEY) scheme.

The 23-year-old, of Biggleswade, runs the charity that was set up by her father Abdul to relieve poverty and hardship among ethnic minorities in Bedford.

It also carries out charity work in Bangladesh.

Now Aysha – whose family run the Viceroy restaurant in St John’s Street – has been nominated by two people who know the charity well.

The YOPEY awards reveal, recognise and reward young unsung heroes across Beds and there is £2,000 in prize money for young winners to share in the community.

One of Aysha’s nominators, Fatiha Rouf, said: “There is a buzz all over Bedford regarding the Aysha Academy.

“Aysha caters for everyone, people from all walks of life, ages and beliefs.”

She added: “Bedford really needed something like this and more importantly needed someone like Aysha.

“ She is always happy and motivated and full of energy and enthusiasm.”

Shanaz Begum also nominated Aysha after attending a bazaar she organised to promote small businesses.

She said: “By charging stallholders and entrance fees, Aysha raised money for charity.

“ She could easily have used the money for her academy, but instead she donated the money to helping Syria.”

Aysha said: “It all started when my father built a school for orphans in Bangladesh in 2006, in the village where he was born.

“Viceroy customers donated to the cause and he decided to start a charity which he named after me.”

She added: “I manage the charity both in Bangladesh and the UK, organising all the projects, arranging meetings and so on.

“It can be hard as I am studying sociology at a London university, but the motivation comes from helping people.”

YOPEY founder Tony Gearing said: “Aysha is clearly a dynamo, running a charity and continuing to study for a degree in London too.”
