Future of home to school transport decided
Free buses cut for some children.
Children attending faith schools will lose their free buses after Central Beds Council decided how transport to schools will be provided in future.
The council inherited its current home to school transport policy from Bedfordshire County Council and has had to look at amending parts of it in a bid to cut costs.
And it made its decision at a meeting on Tuesday (March 9) after a consultation with schools, parents, representatives from denominational schools and tax payers.
While children from low income families or those with disabilities will still receive free transport, it does mean that there will be a review of routes to make them safer for those that choose to walk or ride their bikes to class.
There will also be a review of how children with special educational needs can find more independent ways of getting to school, while children who attend denominational schools will no longer automatically receive free transport.
The council says it will bring its policy in line with some councils in England, such as neighbouring authority Hertfordshire County Council, which removed free transport to denominational schools in 2007.
This new Home to School Transport policy will come into place by September 2010.
