St Mary’s Church in Potton was targeted by lead thieves, who left the chancel roof severely damaged after the night raid in June, with heavy rain causing more destruction inside.

Since then many Potton people have been helping towards the cost and this week three younger members of the St Mary’s community made a touching contribution.

Grace, aged 9, Sophie, aged 7 and Elsa Hope, aged 4, sold some of their toys and books at the recent Sutton School fete and between them raised the fantastic total of £117.05p.

They presented the Rev Gill Smith with a large cheque for that sum, at the service held on Sunday, July 17.

A target of £8,000 has been set for the funds needed. The church has used a security measure of painting ‘SmartWater’ over the lead but is only insured for one lead theft. To ensure full insurance cover, the church is required to install roof alarms to all sections of the church, and there are multiple sections at St Mary’s.

Many fundraising ideas have been put forward and these are all being co-ordinated to make best use of them.

If anyone else would like to contribute, they can do this by using the Just Giving page set up for the roof fund. The link is http://bit.ly/29JwBps
