Go to a middle school student if you want a delicious meal.

Children in Year 8 at Henlow Academy certainly showed their worth as cooks when they designed and created a selection of delicious meals for two.

They were participating in the annual Future Chefs competition, which is run by celebrity chef Brian Turner’s organisation, Springboard.

The youngsters each cooked their meals within a £5 budget and they came up with some mouth-watering options. Meals ranged from sea bass with spicy sweet potato mash, exotic greens and a dip to Indian skewers with mango salsa and cumin flatbread, via studded chicken thighs with her sauce and mushroom risotto.

The competition was judged by Hendrik Dutson, head chef at The Crown in Henlow.

Head of food technology, Helen Lewis, said: “Future Chefs is a great way for our most talented pupils to showcase their culinary abilities.

“They only have one hour to prepare their meal and have a strict budget. This year our pupils have excelled themselves.”

Hendrik and the other judges chose Kieran Harkin as the winner. Kieran tantalised the judges’ tastebuds with a chicken, crouton, brie and bacon stack with a mushroom and prawn sauce and watercress salad garnish.

He will now design a dessert to complement his main course for the regional final against pupils from Years 8 to 11.
