Homeowners left without phone and internet

Damage to cables affects thousands

Homeowners and businesses in Luton and Dunstable have been left without phone lines and internet connection after damage to phone cables.

"Third party" damage to fibre cables close to the A5 meant that as many as 42,000 households were without emails and calls onTuesday and Wednesday as engineers battled to fix the fault.

Homes as far away as Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted were left with a constant engaged tone.

The lines are thought to have gone down at lunchtime on Tuesday.

Network operators BT assured phone and internet users that everything possible was being done to fix the problem.
