Hospital’s future to be discussed

The future of Biggleswade Hospital will be under discussion at a meeting next month.

The future of Biggleswade Hospital will be under discussion at a meeting next month.

Central Beds Council’s social care, health and housing, overview and scrutiny committee will welcome campaigners to its next meeting, which takes place on Monday, October 22.

Central Beds decided to include the hospital on the agenda after anti-closure campaigners Ken Lynch and Doris Brunt handed over a petition containing 6,500 signatures at a full council meeting last Thursday (September 13).

Councillor Carole Hegley, executive member for social care, health and housing at Central Beds Council said: “We recognise the high level of concern among local people about the future of the hospital.

“The petition was presented at our recent full council meeting, where we took the decision to take this issue to the next meeting of the committee.

“This will allow a wider discussion and give residents the opportunity to put
their views to councillors and the organisations responsible for running the hospital and providing health
services there.”

Ken welcomed the decision.

He said: “We want as many people at the meeting as possible.

“The more people there are, the more the council will realise there’s a lot of feeling for our local hospital.”

The meeting will start at 10am.

Anyone who wishes to speak will need to register to do so.

This can be done at www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/council-and-democracy/committees-and-decision-making/overview-and-scrutiny.aspx or by calling Jonathon Partridge on 0300 300 4634.

An NHS Bedfordshire spokesman confirmed that there are currently patients at the hospital, and that a review will be completed next month.
