I shouldn't be allowed to DIY!

April 10, 2009

As a man of advancing years (advancing quicker these days), I have spent a great deal of my time engaged in Do It Yourself projects.

In fact, I remember a time when it wasn't called Do It Yourself so I was a little put off last week when I made what I believe is commonly known as a dog's breakfast of a job.

I have a considerable number of fence panels surrounding my property and they were in grave need of a coat of paint.

I have always been somewhat wary of new fangled ideas, although I'm not against progress. I was among the first gardeners in England to purchase a hover mower and I also (because I am of that age) agreed to try out a paint roller when they became fashionable.

So I entered into the purchase of a sprayer to paint my fence with some enthusiasm. The first spraying machine I bought was an all-singing, all-dancing battery driven model, which I returned to the store the day after I bought it because it didn't work.

I don't mean it didn't work, I mean it didn't work as a paint sprayer, it worked as a machine that sprayed my hands and forearms but not fences!

The lady in the store was so helpful it was almost as if she had heard my story a number of times before. She offered to replace the machine but I declined, asked for a small cash refund and bought a good, old-fashioned, hand-operated, pump-up sprayer.

The trouble was that the hand sprayer had the same type of spray wand that the battery driven had, and it didn't help that I am an idiot.

The new spray did operate reasonably well and I managed to complete three panels before I had to go indoors to wash my arms and hands.

When I returned to the garden I glanced up and noticed that my (white) front door now resembled Big Reggie from Elstow, who is liver and white, which is very nice for a well-bred Spaniel but doesn't really do anything for a front door.

The truth is I had miscalculated the wind direction and had paid the price.

I spent some time repainting the front door and will complete the fence with a brush.
