They have voted Lucy Menheneott, aged 13 and from Ickwell, to be crowned as May Queen on Monday, May 2.

Lucy will be supported by Annabel Walker, who will present the garland, and Fiona Sutherland, who will present the sceptre. Her two other attendants will be Sophie Bryant and Molly Woodman.

Lucy, a pupil at Alban Academy in Great Barford, said: “I am so excited about being the May Queen. I’ve lived in Ickwell all my life and am really looking forward to it. My little sister will be dancing too, so it will be a real family occasion.”

Lucy is an animal lover and enjoys horseriding and dancing.

The May Day festival will start with the procession of dancers gathering in the grounds of the Crown pub, Northill at 1pm and travelling from there to Ickwell led by the Bedford Morris Men, before the crowning of the May Queen and dancing round the maypole takes place.

The May Queen will be presented with a garland, sceptre and crown, all decorated with flowers, and will be given a locket by a former May Queen as a remembrance of the day. This is followed by a spectacular display of dancing.

Nearby will be stalls and sideshows for visitors to enjoy as well as excellent refreshments including home-made cakes in the village hall.

Visitors who stay to the end of the dancing in the arena can take part and have a dance around the maypole too. There’s plenty of free parking near the arena and a great afternoon out for all the family.

The Ickwell May Day Committee is planning to hold a display of its archives in 2017. If you have any old photos or film of Ickwell May Day that you would be willing to copy or loan for this event, contact Richard Beaty on 01767 627119 or email [email protected]

Details of the event will be released nearer the time.
