Keepers' jumbo efforts for conservation

Zoo team will take part in Brighton Marathon

Elephant keepers at Whipsnade Zoo are taking part in a mammoth run to raise money for animal conservation.

Lee Sambrook, Andrew Durham and Gary Hampson will be swapping their wellies for running shoes when they join the Brighton Marathon on Sunday, April 18.

Their training includes taking the elephants on a daily walk around the zoo, which covers 600 acres.

Lee said: "Keeping up with the elephants on a five-mile walk is no easy task, so it certainly gives us a head start."

Money raised by the keepers will help the worldwide conservation work of the Zoological Society of London.
