Landlady handed hefty fine

£1,000 fine handed out for not having correct licence

A negligent landlady who ignored council warnings to acquire a licence for her property has been handed a hefty fine by Luton Magistrates.

Roskana Akhtar, 30, owner of Apple Estate Agents, on Upper George Street, pleaded guilty to operating an unlicensed House in Multiple Occupation (HMO).

Magistrates told Miss Akhtar: "You were advised you needed a licence and even though you applied for a pack you failed to follow it up.

"This was done to benefit only yourself and not for the safety of your tenants."

She was fined 1,000 and ordered to pay a 15 victim surcharge plus costs of 750.
