Luton landlord ordered to repay £1,200 to tenant

Shared house rented out without correct licence

A Luton landlord who allowed five people to live in a three-storey house, despite not having the correct licence to do so, has been made to repay more than 1,200 to one of his tenants.

James Westcott, 26, of Park Street, has been reordered to repay the money to Richard Grovesnor, a student at the University of Bedfordshire, who rented the property as a shared house through a letting agent in the town.

Housing legislation requires any proprietor who wishes to rent out a building where facilities such as bathrooms and kitchens will be shared by five or more people, and where the property consists of three or more floors such as one which includes basements and attic rooms, to have an appropriate licence.

Westcott was originally prosecuted and fined 5,000 plus 220 costs last August at Luton Magistrates Court.
