Make a splash at fundraiser
CHRONICLE Country swimmers are preparing to dive into the world’s biggest fundraising swim.
Swimathon Weekend 2012 will be arriving at the Saxon Pool and Leisure Centre in Biggleswade on the weekend of Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29.
The fundraiser, which will be taking place at 645 swimming pools across the UK will give swimmers the chance to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care and Sport Relief.
Participants can raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care – which provides end-of-life care for terminally ill patients at home or in its hospices – by completing 5k, 2.5k or Team 5k challenges.
Swimmers who want to raise money for Sport Relief – which raises money for good causes in the UK and abroad through Comic Relief – can take on the Big Splash Mile swim.
This can be done individually or as part of a team.
Olympic swimming gold medalist Duncan Goodhew, who launched the 25th Swimathon Weekend earlier this month with model Jodie Kidd said: “We all know that sports such as swimming will enjoy their time in the limelight this year.
“With 2012 also being our 25th anniversary year, we would love to add to the half a million people who have taken part in the event so far, to dive into pools up and down the country. “These amazing people have raised more than £34 million for charity to date and, by teaming up with the Big Splash, we’re aiming to raise record amounts for not one but two important charities.”
Saxon Pool and Leisure Centre manager Natalie Taylor said: “Swimathon Weekend 2012 is a fantastic way to bring our community together, to raise money for charity, and provides a great challenge.”
