Making hay in the sunshine
Volunteers will get the chance to make hay while the sun shines tomorrow (Saturday).
Hay-raking with traditional hay rakes will be on the agenda at Stotfold Nature Reserve, and the weather forecast for the area predicts a day of sunshine.
The Astwick and Stotfold Environmental Link (TEASEL) voluntary group is inviting would-be hay makers to help at one of the reserve’s meadows from midday to 3pm.
TEASEL aims to promote interest in countryside access and conservation in the area and has enlisted the help of the community at the session.
Members of Stotfold Town Council, scouts, Wildlife Watch members and students from St Mary’s Lower School and Etonbury Academy in Arlesey could all be involved.
Volunteers will be using the tools to rake hay from the newly-cut meadow and pile it up into informal haystacks.
Pamela Manfield, TEASEL secretary said: “There are two important conservation reasons behind this. Firstly, removing the grass decreases the fertility of the land and encourages the spread of native wildflowers.
“Also, the piles of hay will provide winter refuges for hibernating insects and amphibians and we hope that they may also encourage grass snakes to nest in the summer, thus increasing the biodiversity of the area.”
Everyone is welcome to help out and volunteers are being urged to bring picnics.
