A celebrity will be opening a new pound shop as part of a family fun day.

A new Poundland store is due to open in Biggleswade market square in the current Store Twenty One premises.

Rumours circulated for a while that the clothes store was due to be replaced with a Poundland branch but the firm has only now confirmed this.

The opening date and the number of jobs at the outlet are also still to be confirmed.

The discount store has more than 410 shops nationwide and sells a range of products at £1 each.

Poundland’s trading director David Coxon said: “Poundland has grown significantly over the last 12 months and it’s fantastic to see this expansion continuing with a new store in Biggleswade.

“We’re looking forward to opening our doors.”

Martin Thomas, chairman of the Biggleswade Chamber of Trade welcomed the news that the new store will be opening in the former Woolworths premises.

He said: “It’s not for me to comment on the nature of the new shop itself but I am glad to hear that we will be seeing a new store there.

“What we don’t want to see is another empty premises.”
