New toilets are hall right with us!

Villagers have celebrated after a hall was refurbished.

Community groups admired the renovation work at Dunton Village Hall when the improvements were unveiled on Saturday (September 15).

The Dunton Village Hall committee arranged for the toilets to be refurbished and was given a £11,000 grant from waste management company Biffa to do so.

Mary Wynn-Lawrence, grants co-ordinator on the committee, lauded the work and welcomed a new era for the hall and for the village.

She said: “When the Parish Plan came out the village hall was looked at and everyone agreed that the gents’ toilets had become quite archaic and were badly in need of refurbishment.

“It had got to the point where we were reluctant to show would-be hirers of the hall the gents in case that put them off a bit!”

The committee then found out that Biffa offered grants to help renovate and maintain community buildings.

Mary added: “We were surprised as we didn’t think that a company like Biffa that deals with waste would be able to help with something like this but it was great to receive the grant.”

The work was carried out over the summer holidays.

Mary said: “The hall is so well used that the summer was the only time that we could feasibly get the work done.

“The results are fantastic – the toilets are almost unrecognisable from how they were and the whole village chipped in with donations of paint, labour and materials.”

Dunton Pre-School and a large number of other organisations will benefit.

Mary added: “I would particularly like to thank the Dunton Community Garden Group, Tony Bennetts, Alan Davey and Marcus Wilson for all of their hard work, help and generosity. It was a real community effort.
