New voters ask the politicians

A Question Time style political debate involved younger members of society.

The session was held at Sandy Upper School with the aim of interesting more potential young voters in politics. Sixth formers were invited to ask questions of three local councillors.

In attendance were Independent Central Beds councillor Adam Zerny from Potton, Conservative Central Beds councillor Naomi Sheppard from Sandy and Liberal Democrat South Cambs councillor Bridget Smith from Gamlingay.

Mr Zerny, who organised the event, said: “It was really positive and the children were really interested by it.”

The teenagers were mostly interested in local issues with subjects being raised including Sandy Skatepark and school buses. They also wanted to know how to get involved by attending local council meetings.

The councillors discussed why it is important to vote and explained which councils are responsible for which services.

Mr Zerny added: “The kids are really bright and interested but we wanted to make sure they are engaged more.

“Given we are always being told turnout at elections is falling, it’s really heartening to see the next generation showing such an interest in local issues.”
