Oustanding Ofsted for Alban Middle School

Inspectors compliment pupils for academic achievement, attendance and behaviour

Alban Middle School has been rated as outstanding by Government Ofsted inspectors following their inspection last month.

The inspection team stated that the Great Bardford school is a very effective school that provides excellent value for money and where leadership and management at all levels is outstanding.

Inspectors also stated pupils achieve very well across the school because their progress is systematically monitored from entry, and the school is effective at setting and monitoring some very challenging individual targets.

The report complimented pupils for their attendance and behaviour which was outstanding; pupils clearly love going to school and have very positive attitudes to their work and each other.

Care, guidance and support for pupils is also outstanding, with teachers and support staff providing a very secure and caring environment for pupils. The inspectors also commented on the attractive environment, enhanced by lovely displays of pupils' work.

Lorraine Dougall, Headteacher of Alban said" "The report is a credit to the hard work put in by everyone connected with the school. I am extremely proud of our children, staff, parents and governors who all deserve huge praise. I was particularly pleased with the inspectors' comment that our curriculum is outstanding, providing pupils with a rich and varied experience."

Bedfordshire County Councillor Rita Drinkwater, Cabinet member for Education, said: "We are tremendously proud of the work taking place at Alban Middle School. It was particularly pleasing to hear how impressed the inspectors were with the way teachers manage their classrooms and set challenging but achievable targets for their pupils."

The inspectors agreed the school should continue to focus on further increasing the number of pupils achieving the higher levels in mathematics in the KS2 SATS tests, and encourage pupils to read regularly.
