Paralympic medallist Harriet visits academy

A Paralympic bronze medallist visited students at an academy on Wednesday (September 19).

Harriet Lee – a former swimming instructor at the Saxon Pool and Leisure Centre in Biggleswade – spoke to youngsters at Etonbury Academy in Arlesey.

The 21-year-old – who came third in the SB9 100m breaststroke final at the London Paralympics – showed youngsters her medal.

She also answered questions and spoke about her career and experiences.

The visit was arranged by Year 7 student Carlie Wells.

Carlie’s family are friends with Harriet, who now lives in Peterborough.

The youngster introduced Harriet and also gave a presentation on a large screen about her life and successes in swimming.

Sue Turgoose, data manager at Etonbury said: “It was lovely to welcome Harriet to the academy and the visit was very inspirational for the students.

“We are always keen to invite people who have achieved a lot like that to speak at our assemblies.

“They instil in students the importance of having goals in life and working as hard as you can to achieve them.”

Etonbury headteacher Dr Al Mistrano said: “Harriet Lee truly inspired the children at Etonbury Academy.

“Our students are used to outstanding success as shown by the best ever examination results in the history of the school, but they were particularly impressed by the courage shown by Harriet and her determination to succeed in the face of adversity.

“Judging by the hundreds taking part in our rich extra-curricular provision launched this week, I think the children have been truly inspired by the example set by Harriet and we look forward to future Etonbury gold medals from the children.”

Etonbury students who attended events at the Olympics and Paralympics were also asked to take pictures and bring them in.

The photographs were put on display on a board which was put up in time for Harriet’s visit.
