Passengers were left stranded at Sandy train station on Bank Holiday Monday evening after a train was terminated because of damage to overhead power lines.
Those who were on the train were told a replacement bus service would be provided within half an hour but no transport ever turned up.
Many of the passengers took refuge in the nearby Bell Pub and used the toilet facilities as well as buying refreshments.
However, landlord John Welbourn, said: “It is a total disgrace that customers are treated this way. I had three young children in the pub waiting to go home to Wisbech and I wouldn’t throw them out.”
He lamented the fact that Sandy train station doesn’t have toilet facilities and was extremely sympathetic towards those who were stranded.
He added: “I don’t and would not want my family treated like this and nor should it happen to anyone else.”
The delays and problems caused by the damage to overhead lines ran into Tuesday morning until service finally returned to normal.
Roger Perkins of First Capital Connect said: “I would like to apologise to all those passengers caught up in the disruption on Monday night.
“While the damage to overhead power lines was outside our control and the responsibility of Network Rail which is investigating the cause, it is FCC as operator who has the task of helping passengers affected.
“We did try to source buses but there were very few available at that time of night.
“The passengers affected should contact our customer relations department on 03450 264700 for information about compensation, explaining that they were put off their train at Sandy.”
