Plans to demolish an historic building will be opposed by a town council – though they accept they are still likely to be approved.

The Biggleswade Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses wants to demolish Kingdom Hall in the town and replace it with a new place of worship.

Central Beds Council has provisionally backed the proposals for the building in Shortmead Street, the former St Andrew’s Church Memorial Hall.

Biggleswade Town Council originally objected to the plans.

At a full council meeting on Tuesday (October 9) councillors debated whether to oppose the redevelopment or simply request that the developer of the new building pays for a commemorative plaque to be fitted there. Although some councillors believe the plans are likely to go ahead they agreed to object to the application all the same.

Biggleswade mayor Tim Woodward said: “I think it is best that we object as then it will be clear on the application that we have done so. We will ask that there is a plaque to commemorate Kingdom Hall on the new building as well.”
