Pound shop to replace clothes store?

editorial image

A town centre clothes store is to close down and be replaced with a pound shop, the Chronicle understands.

Plans are believed to be in place for Store Twenty One in Biggleswade market square to shut down, with a new Poundland shop set to open at the premises.

Store Twenty One has been trading at the former Woolworths store since March 2010.

Woolworths closed its doors for the final time in December 2008 after trading in the market square for half a century.

A spokesman for Poundland could not provide any specific information about the new shop but said: “Poundland is currently considering the acquisition of new stores to add to those already opened this year.

“The stringent acquisition process ensures the new stores are positioned in the right location and fit Poundland’s customer profile.

“Due to the popularity of Poundland’s product ranges, the organisation is keen not to raise anticipation for a new store before plans are finalised.

“Therefore, Poundland cannot disclose any more information at this stage.”

She added: “As soon as all details have been confirmed, Poundland will immediately release this information to the area in question.”

Store Twenty One did not respond to the Chronicle’s requests for a comment.
