PUB OF THE YEAR:
Pub is Royally good and strong as Oak
The search is officially on for Chronicle Country's best boozer.
Since we launched our very first Pub of the Year Competition last week nominations have been flooding in from punters wanting to put their favourite pub in the race.
This week the first pub to be featured is the Royal Oak in Potton after customer Alec Gallagher who rates the pub's top quality food, nominated it.
He said: "I make this nomination principally for the quality of its food.
"I have eaten in the Royal Oak on a number of occasions and the food has been of a consistently high quality.
"More importantly, it seems to me that the pub has a chef with a flair for the unusual."
The Potton pub is run by Ruth Lynn, 48, and her partner Anthony Glynn, 44, who took on the pub three years ago.
Ruth said: "We are really pleased to be nominated. We strive to get good quality and a good atmosphere in our bar and restaurant, so the fact that someone has recognised us is really good."
The Royal Oak is spilt into a bar and A la Carte restaurant and all the food served is homemade - even the ice cream.
Ruth added: "We have two chefs who are both fully qualified so we feel that the food we serve is very good quality and we try to come up withdishes that are a little bit different.
"We do things like ostrich, venison steak with chocolate sauce, blackberry casis trifle, and our chunky handmade chips, which always go down very well.
"We also do salmon fish cakes, which prove extremely popular. We took it off our menu once, but there was uproar so it is now a permanent feature."
The Bedfordshire boozer has also won awards from Taste of Bedfordshire, its ales have been awarded the cask marque, and it was also among Greene King's top 250 Master Brewer pubs.
For those of you fancy real ale it serves three regular brands and two different ones, which get changed regularly.
It also raises money for the Willow Foundation regularly and holds weekly Sunday quiz nights.
But if you think another pub beats the Royal Oak let us know.
