Railway garden finally arrives

A COMMUNITY group has transformed a piece of wasteland into a garden to brighten the days of both commuters and passersby.

On Saturday (January 28) Sandy Enhancement Group’s new flowerbed was officially unveiled after seven years of planning.

Located at the entrance to the town’s railway station, it has a train track theme.

There is a short stretch of track with wild flowers sown in the ballast. By the seat at one end there is an information board explaining how the East Coast mainline came to Sandy in the mid 19th century and the difference it made to the town.

Chairman of the Sandy Enhancement Group, Councillor Nigel Aldis, said: “It’s been a long time from conception to completion but we hope that visitors and residents alike will appreciate this feature.”

He thanked everyone who had given money, materials or energy including Susan and David Sutton, Barry Groom, Paul Clarke, Carol Baker-Smith, Michael Bartlett, the Nene Valley Railway and John Welbourne.
