Repairs planned at cemetery chapel

Repairs will be carried out to a cemetery chapel to help bring it back to its former glory.

Biggleswade Town Council will spend £37,890 on the work at the cemetery chapel in Drove Road.

Councillors have agreed to follow up a quotation for the work from one of three contractors they had contacted.

The plans follow controversy earlier this year when Central Beds Council added the Grade II listed building to its Buildings at Risk Register.

Members of the town council’s public land and open spaces committee had previously agreed a five-year plan to carry out minor repairs that members agreed were necessary.

But after a town councillor showed a conservation officer from Central Beds Council around the chapel the latter reported that the building was dilapidated and in a poor state of repair.

The town council has since contacted three contractors for quotations, and is now set to choose one – provided it can complete the work in a shorter time span than that so far suggested.

Councillors’ preferred contractor has provided a quotation for a four-year completion period but the council would prefer to see it finished in one year.

A survey of the building was previously undertaken by Biggleswade building surveyors the Levitt Partnership, who have passed on their recommendations for the work that needs to be done at the chapel.

Speaking at a meeting of full council on Tuesday, August 28, Councillor Madeline Russell said that of the three that have been sought Quotation C would be surely be the best option.

She said: “I have looked into this and not all of the quotations include just the work that needs to be done.

“I think it is important that we choose a contractor who will take care of the specific work that the Levitt Partnership have recommended.”

Councillors agreed to pursue Quotation C, but to find out if the quoted work can be completed in one year rather than four.
