Right words, but were they in the right order?

Jim Stewart, Chronicle editor, July 4, 2008

There are many things I love about newspapers, a world I joined some 19 years ago now.

The technology may have moved on, and so has the local world we report on, but you still get a buzz from penning items that are read by thousands of people (I would say millions but that may be stretching the truth with the Chronicle... just a tad anyway!).

What is also good, particularly with the advent of word processors, is if you don't like the way you've written something you can go back and alter it before it's published.

Yes, I know we don't always because the odd error slips through – but we have to give you something to look out for, don't we?

This ability to change things before it is received by the public at large is a privilege not extended to you when you are on live radio, a

point I'm finding out fast.

The guys of Biggles FM, that excellent community station serving these parts, have generously given me a Monday night show on their

airwaves to talk on Local Matters.

It's the second time I've taken up this offer to host a show so you think I would be getting the hang of it by now.

So would I – but the moment that On Air sign came on for the first show on Monday evening, and I realised the airwaves were all mine, the

ability to say a simple sentence without stumbling over half the words becomes a real speciality of mine!

As a certain Mr Morecambe might have said, I said all the right words – but not necessarily in the right order!

It's nerves, of course, and after the first record played hopefully I got better and the show seemed to go pretty well.

Luckily I was fortunate enough to have two excellent guests in the Rev Jim Broadbridge and the Very Rev John Morley – we were talking

religious matters, as if you hadn't guessed – and their eloquent

answers to my questions proved interesting to our listeners.

Full marks to the guys of Biggles FM who put on a great broadcast.
