Staff tried in vain to save neglected dog

STAFF at an animal welfare charity have described their shock and distress after a severely neglected dog was dumped outside their shelter.
David Massey, 62, and Marjorie Massey, 60, of Beeston’s High Road, admitted animal cruelty when they appeared at Bedford Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
They caused unnecessary suffering to their Old English Sheepdog, Woody, also known as Floyd, before abandoning him at Wood Green Animal Centre in Godmanchester on Saturday, August 30.
Head of animal welfare at Wood Green, Shelley Brooker, said: “We were all extremely shocked and distressed at Floyd’s condition when he was abandoned.”
Sadly, Woody was in such a bad state that he had to be put down to prevent him suffering further.
Shelley added: “All the staff worked extremely hard to ensure that Floyd received the best love and attention that we could give him but sadly because of his age and many ailments we were unable to make him comfortable enough to guarantee a reasonable quality of life.”
The court was told that the couple had been too embarrassed by their dog’s condition to take him to a vet.
Magistrates adjourned the case for pre-sentence reports and the couple will appear in court again next Wednesday.
