Students take to the Lions’ peace process

Artistic students are designing posters for an international competition.

Youngsters at schools around Chronicle Country are taking part in the Lions International Peace Poster Contest.

One winner could travel to the US to take part in the grand final if they are successful.

The competition is aimed at children aged from 11 to 13 and asks entrants to produce a poster depicting their idea of peace and what it stands for.

The programme is being run in Chronicle Country by the Biggleswade Sandy Lions Club.

Etonbury Academy in Arlesey, Burgoyne Middle School in Potton, Sandye Place Academy, Henlow Academy, Robert Bloomfield Academy and Edward Peake Middle School are all taking part.

So far Nicole Valdez, 12, has been announced as the winner at Burgoyne Middle School, while Tara Prutton, 12 has won the Henlow Academy contest.

Competition organiser Roger Wolburn of the Biggleswade Sandy Lions Club said: “Each school holds its own competition and the winners then compete in the district final, which takes in London and the home counties.

“There is then a further final for contestants from across the UK and Ireland.

“The winner of this will travel to the US for the international final, and there is a $5,000 award on offer to the eventual winner.”

Mr Wolburn has been impressed with the designs he has seen so far.

He added: “There have been some excellent posters produced.

“The competition is interesting in that every child has a very different idea of how peace should be portrayed. We now hope that the competition will become an annual fixture.”

Lions International runs the competition globally so students can share their unique image of peace with others.

The theme this year is ‘Imagine Peace’ and the contest aims to promote greater tolerance and international understanding.
