Girls now make up 20 per cent of the county’s scouting body, which also includes the cubs and beavers.

District commissioner Jan Brooker said: “In Biggleswade we had an 11 per cent rise in female youth membership last year. This took us to 137, the highest number this century.”

With adventure at its core, scouting helps young people achieve their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities.

Teenagers Ella, Jemma and Emma said: “We enjoy scouts because it lets us do our own thing.

“There are exciting water sports such as rafting, as well as incident hikes and the opportunity to visit other countries on a World Scout Jamboree and meet thousands of scouts from other countries.”
