Talking newspapers set to return
'It just ground to a halt'
Blind and partially sighted people will soon be able to get all the news and views from Luton and Dunstable again with the resurrection of the area's talking newspaper service.
For many years volunteer readers with the Luton branch of charity Sight Concern have recorded stories from the Herald&Post's sister newspapers, The Luton News and Dunstable Gazette, which are then distributed on cassette tape and CD for listeners.
But the service came to a halt last year because of staffing issues.
The Herald&Post was only made aware of the problem this week when we were contacted by a Luton resident who had been a regular subscriber to the service, who complained that he had not received an issue for several months.
Sight Concern's Alan Chalkly says the charity is hoping to get the service up and running again in a few weeks' time.
He said: "One of our key members had to take a step back in November because of health issues and it just ground to a halt.
"Then all the problems with the snow kicked off and people were away over Christmas, and without our volunteers we're nothing.
"We have been getting some issues out in Leighton Buzzard but unfortunately we haven't been able to do any in Luton and Dunstable."
