Train staff left disabled man 'quite shaken'

A man was left "shocked" after train staff gave him incorrect information.

A disabled man was left shaken after train staff accused him of "getting away" with receiving discounts on his train tickets.

A man from Biggleswade who asked not to be named, was travelling back from London Kings Cross on Saturday and approached staff at the station to buy a ticket.

However, he was shocked when train staff became "aggressive and abusive" and told him that "First Capital Connect does not know what it's doing" and he should not have been receiving the discounts.

He said: "I was quite shaken by the whole experience.

"It's not often that you get abuse as a disabled man, and I really didn't appreciate the manager telling me that I had effectively been defrauding the railways by getting a travel discount I wasn't entitled to."

The 42-year-old, who is partially sighted, has a Herts and Beds councils discount card which he uses to travel.

He was told that he could not use the discount card to purchase a return ticket because he had taken the fast train into London, and not bought his ticket at Biggleswade.

When he returned home he spoke to the Association of Train Operating Companies and First Capital Connect, who run the discount scheme.

They told him that the information he had been given by East Coast staff was incorrect.
