VIDEO: Family escape harm during dramatic fire
A relieved father is counting his blessings after his family escaped a raging house fire unhurt.
Alex Rosenblum rushed home to Rowan Crescent, Biggleswade on Wednesday (March 13) after his rented two-bedroom house caught fire.
His partner Louise Demetriou discovered the blaze at around 3.15pm and fled the house with Alex’s mother Christina and the couple’s three-year-old son, also called Alex.
Plasterer Alex, 30, who had been working in Cambridge, said: “A friend called me to tell me what had happened and I rushed back. Thankfully Louise and my mum and son managed to get out before it got any worse.
“Our other children Chloe and Lia were also at school so everyone is safe – I’m just very thankful for that.”
Watching firefighters from Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service battle the blaze, Alex estimated that it may have caused £10,000 worth of damage.
He said: “As it was the first floor all of my clothes were up there, along with a TV, my iPad, all sorts of valuable stuff.
“My uncle is an artist and there were also some of his paintings up there which I couldn’t put a price on to be honest.”
The family rent the semi-detached property from Aragon Housing Association and hope they can be quickly rehoused.
They will stay at Christina’s home in London in the meantime.
Writing on the Biggleswade Chronicle Facebook page, neighbours of the family spoke about the effect the fire had on the surrounding area.
Firefighters cordoned off a section of the road while they battled the flames.
Chloe Nicholas said: “Only live round the corner and the smoke was so thick you could see it from my bedroom window.”
Helen Cooper added: “Was really scary to see how quickly this fire took hold. So glad no-one was hurt.”
