JD Wetherspoon is to open a new premises in Biggleswade, the Chronicle understands.
The pub chain is believed to have bought the former Crown Hotel in Biggleswade High Street, an historical coaching inn.
The premises – which is now boarded up – was formerly owned by Greene King, who sold it late last year.
The current owner is listed by the Land Registry as being Marlborough House Real Estate Limited.
A JD Wetherspoon spokesman declined to comment on the reports, but the Chronicle understands that a deal has been agreed.
Rumours have been greeted enthusiastically in the town.
Councillor Madeline Russell, chairman of Biggleswade Town Council’s town centre management committee, said: “Wetherspoons would be welcome in Biggleswade but I would hope that any refurbishment would be sympathetic to the building and to its historical significance to the town.”
The Crown is the last remaining coaching inn in Biggleswade.
It was also where the Great Fire of Biggleswade started in 1776, a blaze which destroyed a third of the town.
