Work to start on new roundabout

Work on a new roundabout at a busy road junction is to start soon.

Central Beds Council and David Wilson Homes are finalising plans for the traffic island at the junction of Shortmead Street and Sun Street in Biggleswade.

The developer – which is building 125 new houses in nearby Potton Road – was due to begin work on the roundabout last year.

But following a design revision of the plans the project has been delayed.

Chris Hatfield, managing director for David Wilson Homes South Midlands said: “Following the approval of our traffic calming measures, we were asked to postpone the works by the council’s highways department, as we were advised that the extent of works was likely to change.

“A revised scope of works was subsequently agreed with the council.

“We are currently working very closely with the highways consultant to finalise the plans so that construction can commence.”

Councillor Nigel Young, executive member for sustainable communities, strategic planning and development at Central Beds Council said: “We are working closely with the developer to ensure that the works are carried out as soon as possible.

“We know it has taken a while and that there have been delays that have prevented the works being carried out.

“We expect progress to be made very soon and are working with the developer towards a positive outcome.”

The need for a roundabout at the junction has been discussed frequently by Biggleswade Town Council, including at a meeting on Tuesday (January 22).

Writing on the Biggleswade Chronicle Facebook page, readers also spoke about the problems facing drivers there.

Melissa Day said: “It’s a no-brainer – they MUST put a roundabout there. It’s the most congested area, especially at rush hour.”

Sue Sheppard added: “It’s been crying out for a roundabout for years – It causes huge delays,”
