A major site in the middle of Biggleswade was the big topic in the Chronicle 25 years ago this week.
We reported that just two firms were vying for the contract to transform the Gloster Saro factory on the Market Square into a multi-million pound shopping complex.
Originally more than 150 developers expressed an interest in taking on the work, which it was suggested should leave Biggleswade with a new supermarket, multi-storey car park for up to 500 vehicles, shops, offices and possibly a nightclub.
And with the Stratton Business Park attracting firms to Biggleswade, the town chamber of trade hoped the market square redevelopment would herald a new era of prosperity for Biggleswade.
Biggleswade mayor Duncan Strachan said the final choice must be the right one, as the decision was probably the most important affecting the town for three decades.
