Central Beds Council has responded to claims by a developer that its planning process was ‘undemocratic’.

Catesby Estates Ltd had complained that an application for a Shefford development on land adjacent to Campton and Ampthill Road. was not set to go to committee and instead be decided by officers (Chronicle, July 25).

They claimed this meant the wishes of the community would go unheard.

But Jason Longhurst, Director of Regeneration and Business at Central Beds Council, said the application was to be decided by delegated powers as it had not been referred to the Development Management Committee by an elected Ward Member.

He added: “The application is being considered very carefully having regard to the council’s planning policies, national planning guidance, all relevant correspondence, including neighbour responses and the objection from the Shefford Town Council, and the benefits of the scheme as highlighted by the applicant.”
