Staff are in a pickle!
GENEROUS employees at a coffee shop have been happy about getting in a pickle at work, especially when it comes to charity.
A range of jams and chutneys have been on sale as part of a fundraising drive at Cafe Mocha in Biggleswade, and all for a very worthy cause.
So far baristas at the High Street shop have raised £130 for the HOPEHIV charity, and are hoping to bring in another £30 or more when sales of their next batch are taken into account.
HOPEHIV supports children and young people in sub-Saharan Africa who are affected by HIV and AIDS, and is one of various good causes supported by Biggleswade Baptist Church.
Pam Ekiert, who works part-time at the coffee shop and is also a member of Biggleswade Baptist Church, said she was keen to help out when she first heard about the charity’s new fundraising scheme.
She said: “Three of us from the church were attending a conference when we met a representative from HOPEHIV.
“The representative gave us £10 each and asked us if we could go away and make as much money for the charity as possible using our £10 notes.”
The three returned home and talked about how they could make best use of the money, and agreed that by making and selling the jams and chutneys they would not need to spend a huge amount but could raise a good sum for the charity. Pam, who has spent time working on a variety of charitable projects for the London Road church, added: “We knew people who go to the church who have apple and pear trees in their gardens, and of course fruit that they would not necessarily need.
“We asked them if they could pass it on to us and then we used the £30 we were given by the HOPEHIV representative to buy sugar, vinegar, and other items we needed for the cooking process.”
