Smokers are being urged to ditched the cigarettes.

Today (Wednesday, March 12) is No Smoking Day and cigarette fans can take an extra boost for their willpower with the knowledge that they will not be alone in taking up the challenge.

This year’s No Smoking Day has a ‘V for Victory’ theme, which aims to inspire hundreds of thousands of smokers to win the fight against cigarettes.

Central Beds Council’s Stop Smoking service will be on hand to help put smokers on the road to victory, providing information, support and encouragement to put together a personal battle plan so that they are in the best possible position to make a successful attempt to quit.

Councillor Andrew Turner, deputy executive member for social care, health and housing, said: “Stopping smoking is the first step to a longer and healthier life.

“I managed to quit three years ago after smoking for 40 years so if I can do it anyone can.

“I like having the extra pounds in my pocket and don’t run out of puff or cough like I used to – and my wife tells me that my clothes no longer pong either so she is happier too.

“I urge you to give it a go as well and see what a difference not smoking could mean for you.”
