Teachers, carpenters and chimney sweeps all served together for benefit of Henlow
Our August 8 photograph entitled 'Why were they there ?' showing a mystery gathering at Henlow Village Hall in the '50's prompted a response from Margaret Major.

She emailed us to say she is sure the picture is of Henlow Parish Council as photogra
phs were taken regularly at council gatherings.

She was also able to supply all the names to Julian Cakebread's photograph which she hopes are correct.

Please click on the link to see the original photograph and story.

In the back row from the left are Arthur Cooper, Stan Dunn, Mr Hampson (head teacher of the junior school), Tony Mager, Horace Redman, Sidney Hall, and Les Lymm (the village chimney sweep) while in the front row are Clem Handley, Rev Howard, Ted Burgess, Harold Mager, Wilf Jordon, Sid Dilley (carpenter and Margaret's father), and Tom Hare.

Said Margaret: "My brother also remembers Ben and Mary's parrot (at the Engineer's Arms, Henlow).

"At times they used to have it sitting on the bar.

"It wouldn't be very hygienic these days!"

Thanks go to Margaret.

This story appeared in an autumn issue of Memory Lane.
