Blackett looks to grasp his chance
First start for versatile defender
Adaptable defender Shane Blackett is hoping to make the left-back berth his own following an injury to Freddie Murray.
The 27-year-old defender made his first start of the season in Monday's 1-1 home draw with Hayes & Yeading, but admitted he was disappointed for the dependable Irishman who has tweaked his knee ligaments.
Blackett said: "Freddie felt it after Saturday's game so I knew I could be involved.
"He has had a slight tweak on his medial. I had a similar one two or three weeks ago. Hopefully it's not as serious as we might think and he will be up and running again soon.
"I'm gutted for Freddie but if I can step in and impress it's all good for me.
"I've been patient waiting for my chance and we were unfortunate that I came in with a draw and it was unfortunate not to get a win.
"On a personal level, I'm pleased to get my first 90 minutes."
Blackett's prospects at centre-half have also increased following the departure of Alan White last week and he knows his flexibility could be key in gaining more game time.
He said: "I can play either position, which is a luxury and it's good to have that flexibility in my game.
"On a personal level it's important to stay fit for me and the team. If called upon I know I can step in and do a good job for the team and hopefully get us where we want to be, which is League Two next season."
And Blackett was hoping to keep hold of his shirt for Saturday's televised clash at Grimsby Town, saying: "I hope so. It's not my decision at the end of the day.
"You have to wait and see and be patient."
Boss Richard Money believes that Blackett is a more than able deputy, adding: "Freddie Murray opened his knee medial ligament on Saturday, it's not too serious we don't think, but with games coming so quick, he wasn't quite fit enough.
"Shane showed he is an able deputy.
"He is certainly going to give Freddie Murray a run for his money in that position I would suggest."
