Blues win Beds Senior Cup 'dress rehearsal'

Saturday defeats for Waders, Reds, United and Potton

In what was perhaps a dress rehearsal for the final of the Beds Senoir Cup on May 21, Arlesey Town won their final Southern League game of the season this aftetrnoon against Leighton Town thanks to two second half goals.

The first came barely 15 seconds into the second half when Zema Abbey slipped the ball inside for Nathan Frater who drilled it past visiting keeper Lee Clark from 15 yard out.

Then with ten minutes left, a corner kick taken from the right take by Lee Wilson was headed in skipper Luke Gregson for 2-0.

Biggleswade Town's hopes of ending on a high note were dashed at Bedworth who won 4-0. United were 1-0 up at half time thanks to Ramsay who also made it 2-0 straight after the interval. Mewles added a fourth 18 minutes from time while Norman completed the job in the 84th minute.

There were celebrations at Ram Meadow where Bury Town were crowned Southern League Division One Midlands champions following a 3-0 win against Marlow in front of over 1,500 fans while nearest rivals Hitchin Town played out a goalless draw at Burnham.

At the other end of the table, second from bottom Barton Rovers were 1-0 winners at basement boys Aylesbury United thanks to Spencer's 54th minute strike although the two clubs both face relegation.

The misery continued for both Langford and Biggleswade United in the Premier Division of the Spartan South Midlands League.

The Reds were beaten 2-0 by Kentish Town in a match switched back to Forde Park which leaves them third from bottom with one game to play.

Langford have 36 points from their 41 games while second from bottom Brimsdown Rovers have a game in hand and are now just a point behind them with Welwyn Garden City already doomed on 26 points from 41 games.

Biggleswade United suffered a 3-0 defeat at Haringey Borough and as it was their last (and 42nd) game on the season.

United have finished on 39 points and are fifth from bottom while the club between them and Langford are Hillingdon Borough who have two games to play and are now on 37 points which means United could drop two places to third from bottom while the Reds could be relegated with welwyn if Brimsdown and Hillingdon pick up points this next week.

In the United Counties League, Stotfold were without a game but in Division One, Potton United lost 2-1 at home to Thrapston Town.
