Busy fortnight for the Rockets

editorial image

Members of the Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club have been busy over the last two weeks with races in the British Cycling BMX East Regional Series with round 3 at Derby BMX Club as part of the annual East v Midlands Inter regional Challenge with the return leg at Peterborough in August after the Olympics and then last weekend at the track of the Norwich BMX Club for round 4 of the scheduled 9 events.

The Derby club is hosting rounds 8/9 of the National Series in two weeks time so the Inter-Regional was the last time many of the riders could train on the track before the big event so this event attracted over 350 competitors which may have been even greater if the weather had been more predictable.

The Rockets had nine riders register for the event with Joshua Abbott in the 7 year class getting the Rockets of to a flying start as he made the A final and finished in 8th and in the 8 year class Harry Evans took 5th in the class B Final.

The Girls 9-10 category saw Ella Tomsett easing into the A final where she took a hard earned 6th place.

In the Male 10’s B final Bradley Marvel took 6th and another Rocket to move up from Novice to the main series classes was Kane Davis who took 4th in the Class C final.

The male 12 year class saw James King looking good in the qualifying rounds but a slip in the semi final left him to contest the B final where he took 4th whilst team mate Charlee Davis took 7th in the C final.

The Male 14 class was another battle between two Rockets with Ethan Vernon eventually taking the 4th place ahead of team mate Aaron Dalleywater in 5th.

The Regional race at Norwich was a smaller event as it only includes the East Anglia riders but even so the event attracted over 125 riders and with all the Roystons riders having moved out of the novice classes it was straight into the expert classes Joshua Abbott in the 7 year class got the Rockets of to a flying start as he took a fine first place and in the 8 year class both Rockets made the A final with Joshua Izzard taking 2nd just ahead of Harry Evans in a fine 3rd.

The Girls 7-8 class saw Harriet Alexander taking 4th on one of the longest tracks in the country whilst in the Girls 9-10 category Ella Tomsett took 2nd place. In the Male 9yr class Elliott Bowyer took 3rd place and in the Male 10’s Royston had three riders with Bradley Marvel leading the charge with a fine 3rd place and chased hard all day by Alfie Salmon who finished in 5th with Kane Davis taking 2nd in the class B final.

The male 12 year class another Rocket battled for the lead all day but James King had to settle for a hard earned 2nd but Myles Fisher managed one place higher in the Male13 year class.

Competing up a class was James Handliegh who took 7th in the 17-24 class and with Masters and Veterans categories combined to make a 30+ class both Royston riders made the main “A” final with Richard Townsend taking the win just inches ahead of Lee Alexander in 2nd and Darren Foreman took 5th in the Vets section.

The final Royston rider of the day, competing in the Cruiser class was Mathew Salmon who finished in 3rd in the 35-39yr category.

The next events on the BMX calendar is another Regional Series races at Braintree on July 22nd and the National races return with round 8 and 9 at Derby on July 28/29th =

Royston’s own Summer Series started in early June and the races alternate with coaching sessions every other Tuesday with the gates opening at 6.00pm.
