Stevens hits ton as Potton stun St Albans

In-form Sean Stevens piled on more runs for Potton Town as they shocked league leaders St Albans in the Herts League on Saturday.

His century played a pivotal role in swinging the Division Two B game Potton’s way as they became the first side to beat their Clarence Park hosts in the league this summer.

St Albans chose to bat first but James Howlett and Kelvin MacFarlane took early wickets to peg them back. Mabuza scored 74 before being run out, and the innings closed on 229 all out.

In the reply openers Stevens and Stephen Williams (38) put on 99 for the opening partnership.

A few wickets then started to fall but Stevens stayed resolute, scoring 13 fours and two sixes in a wonderful innings of 105.

He was finally out with seven wickets down and the side seven short of the target, but Howlett’s unbeaten 32 saw Potton home with two wickets and nearly three overs to spare.

Clifton were also victorious in Division Five B.

Hosting Welwyn Garden City III, they batted first and were bowled out in the final over for 282.

Welwyn were always behind the run-rate and eventually sucuumbed to 162 all out, 120 runs short.

Potton Town II cruised to victory over Stevenage II. David Salmon carried his bat with 89 and Sam Willis added 67 as Potton posted 206-7 in their 40 overs.

Giles Carter took 4-15 in six overs as the visitors were always in trouble in reply. Salmon took two more wickets and Jonathan Corrigan mopped up the tail as Potton won by 116 runs.
