Young Waders sign off in style

A fantastic two years together for this squad came to an end in style, as they producing a great second half performance to retain the champions trophy.

During their league campaign these Biggleswade youngsters dominated most of their games, but they had to dig deep to produce a superb second-half comeback against Sudbury last Thursday.

The opening 30 minutes flowed from end to end as both sides looked to grab the initiative.

The Waders were just over hitting passes, while at the other end Sudbury were playing fantastic one-touch football that had the Biggleswade youngsters defending for their lives at times.

Most of Sudbury’s best moments came when either James Baughurst or Oliver Dunlop were involved.

Fortunately for Biggleswade the Sudbury final ball was often over hit.

Lee Northfield had the best chance for the Waders, but his left foot lob over the advancing keeper fell the wrong side of the upright.

The Waders then came unstuck on 34 minutes as Sudbury took a deserved lead, Oliver Peters shooting home from the edge of the box.

Sudbury went in search of a second but the Waders saw it through to half time.

The second half though saw the Biggleswade youngsters take the game to Sudbury and the turning point came on 64 minutes as Northfield produced a great run from the halfway line, and his shot was turned away for a corner.

From the corner, Rhys Thorpe outmuscled his marker and smashed home the equaliser with his left foot.

Straight from the kick-off, George Bailey regained possession and the Waders piled forward.

Josh Holmes drove into the Sudbury box, and although his cross was partially cleared, Matthew Moore put the ball back into the danger area and Bailey bundled it home.

The game was still on a knife-edge, and with two minutes left Sudbury who almost produced an equaliser, only for Dan Smith to produce a great save from Wayne Blackman.

The young Waders finally killed the game off in the final minute of time added on.

Northfield set Rhys Thorpe free, and he was fouled in the penalty area. Up stepped Riley, on his 18th birthday, to rifle home the spot-kick and make it 3-1.

The Waders were worthy winners atfer a brilliant second-half comeback.
