Ansell-Carter scores five in Potton rout

Gary Ansell-Carter scored five goals as Potton United returned to winning ways with a convincing 6-1 win over lowly Stewarts & Lloyds on Saturday.

For this match Potton were without goalkeeper Will Cook and Calum Forster, Aiden Mclean and Cory Cooper. They did welcome debutant goalkeeper Declan Turner and Joe Sutton who was returning from injury.

The first goal came as early as the second minute when good passing play ended with Nick Finney heading the ball back across the goal for Ansell-Carter to nod home from close range.

Potton continued to press and in the ninth minute the ball was worked to Sam Piesse and his fine shot gave the goalie no chance. Danny Webb had a shot blocked for a corner from which Luke Harradine headed over.

S&L were awarded an indirect free kick for a pass back to the new keeper, Turner, who handled but Alessio Mistrengelo fired over the bar from 14 yards.

Webb saw his fierce shot well saved by keeper Riggario and in the 23rd minute Potton increased their lead when a Webb centre found Ansell-Carter to head home.

However some slack defending led to S&L reducing the arrears – a foul by Luke Harradine just outside the area saw Harry Hembury blast the ball into the net just under the bar in the 35th minute.

Just before half-time the keeper was out of his goal clearing the ball and from his clearance Nick Finney’s effort from 25 yards rebounded off the bar to safety.

In the second half Potton resumed their pressure with Webb heading wide from a corner.

On 56 minutes Webb was though on goal and unselfishly passed to Ansell-Carter who had the easy task of putting it into the empty net. Play was fairly even until the 71st minute when Piesse and Webb combined well to give Ansell-Carter the chance to further increase Potton’s lead.

Webb was put through and shot wide before Kenny Simith forced a good save from the keeper. Shyti Donald was shown a red card for kicking out at Joe Sutton.
